The collaboration between writer Heather Sellers
and artist Jenny Krasner is based on Krasner’s computer scans of
three-dimensional objects and photographs. Sellers works from Krasner’s
design elements, in various stages of completion, in order to generate
brief narratives addressing women’s experiences as mothers, daughters,
and friends. As Sellers submits new text and revisions, Krasner
manipulates and reconfigures the images. Krasner employs a computer
writing tablet, enabling her to draw and copy Sellers’ prose poems
directly onto the work. The images are mailed back and forth (Krasner
resides in Manhattan, Sellers in Holland, Michigan), reworked perhaps a
dozen times; Sellers launches further pieces of writing from the images
in progress. Krasner also uses Sellers’ longer narratives to generate
image elements, and new text is generated from this pictorial
conversation between the two artists. The artists originally met when
they were each in residence, working on separate projects, at The
Seaside Institute's "Escape to
Create", in Florida. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Heather Sellers is the author of four books, including poetry, memoir, childrens’ and the award-winning Georgia Under Water (Sarabande Books, 2001). She won an NEA for fiction, and her book of stories was featured in the Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers program. She is an associate professor of English. www.heathersellers.com
